The Strand was born from bold ideas and visionary investment. In 1935, local entrepreneur Hugh V. Manning, with his partner J.C.H. Wink, turned ambition into reality when they built the finest movie house Marietta had ever seen. Years later, the theatre continued to evolve, fueled by community visionaries and showmen like James Zimmerman, whose dazzling contests and marquee antics lit up the Square in the 1950s – and again by passionate locals in the 1980s who reimagined The Strand as a cinema and pub.
And today, we are proudly known as the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre because another titan of local industry recognized the powerful economic impact – and honored Rachel’s deep inspiration and aspiration – to create a thriving arts center at the heart of our community.
That spirit lives on today – and we can’t do it without you.
By sponsoring a season, show, or series at The Strand, you’re not only putting your name behind high-quality entertainment – you’re stepping into a legacy of community impact, historic preservation, and cultural celebration.
