The Strand Teams Up With Susan G. Komen For The Cure

Marietta, Ga. (September 30, 2011) — The Earl Smith Strand Theatre is teaming up with Susan G Komen for the Cure on October 15th in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On October 15th, The Strand will be screening the box office hit, Moulin Rouge (PG-13), starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor with 50% of ticket proceeds benefitting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

“As a nonprofit, it’s easy to get caught up in your own fundraising needs, especially in this tough economy,” said Cassi Costoulas, The Strand’s Director of Business Development and Marketing. “Although our fundraising is still in full force, the staff and board of The Strand believe strongly in being stewards of our community and giving back when possible.”

Not only does the ticket include admission to the film screening, but it also includes admission to the cupcake and coffee tasting for the first 100 guests to arrive and present their ticket. The tasting will be hosted on The Strand’s Top Level Event Room and is sponsored by Rev Coffee of Smyrna, and Marietta’s own Miss Mamie’s Cupcakes, Cakes, and Such.

Susan G. Komen was born in 1943, and at the age of 33 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Three years later, she died at the age of 36. Susan’s younger sister Nancy G. Brinker, who felt that things could have ended better if people knew more about cancer and its treatment, founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation two years after her death in 1982. In 2007, the organization changed its name to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and continues to pursue its promise “to end breast cancer forever”

Today, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, and is the largest, best- funded, and most well known breast cancer organization in the United States. The organization has a network of over 100,000 volunteers working in 124 affiliates worldwide and is considered one of the most trusted nonprofit organizations in America. Since 1982, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure has invested nearly $2 billion towards its cause, supporting advocacy, research, education, social support programs and health services In the U.S.

Tickets are $10. Cupcake and coffee tasting begins at 7p.m., immediately followed by the film at 8p.m. Tickets are on sale now.

The historic Earl Smith Strand Theatre is a multi-use performing arts and events facility. The theatre is governed by the Friends of The Strand, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and depends on the financial support of private and corporate donors.
