The Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre will kick off its celebration of Black History Month with a special screening of ‘Selma’ on Sunday, January 20 in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
‘Selma’, directed by Ava DuVernay and filmed partially on the Marietta square, tells the story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history. The screening of ‘Selma’ on the Sunday before MLK Jr Day will kick off a series of movies at The Strand celebrating Black History Month in February.
In February, The Strand will screen 1967’s ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner’ starring Academy Award winning Sidney Poitier, Steven Spielberg’s star studded ‘The Color Purple’ based on the award winning novel by American author Alice Walker, and the spirited movie musical ‘The Wiz’ starring music legends Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.
In conjunction with these films, the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art will be offering free admission to the museum when presented with a movie ticket or proof of purchase to the movies below. The museum will offer extended hours on screening dates.
