Marietta, Ga. (September 3, 2014) — The Strand has a brand new line-up of movies coming up soon, as well as a one-of-a-kind tribute concert! This September and October, patrons can beat the heat and grab a box of popcorn and a cold one at any of our screenings of some of our most-loved movies.
To Kill A Mockingbird (Friday, September 5 @ 8PM) Movie Screening – Known as one of the most important American films of all time, 1962’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a timeless story of injustice, family, and steadfast integrity in the face of overwhelming adversity. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in the Depression-era South, defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge and his kids against prejudice. To Kill a Mockingbird was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress and the American Film Institute has named Atticus Finch the greatest movie hero of the 20th century. The Wiz (Friday, September 12 @ 8pm) Movie Screening – Time to ease on down the road with Diana Ross as Dorothy, Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, and Richard Pryor as The Wiz. The cult classic adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz” is based on the musical of the same name. Dorothy is a shy Harlem kindergarten teacher who is brought by a snowstorm to the mysterious Land of Oz, a dangerous megalopolis that resembles New York City. Sing Along with The Sound of Music (Saturday, September 13 @ 8PM) Movie Sing-Along – Join Julie Andrews as she sings “The hills are alive…” in this popular family flick. In Rodgers and Hammerstein’s greatest collaboration, a feisty nun (Julie Andrews) is sent to care for the unruly, motherless Von Trapp children. She soon tames them and finds herself falling for their stern father (Christopher Plummer). The lyrics pop up on screen so everyone can sing along to this classic movie musical! Back N’ Black: The AC/DC Experience (Friday, September 19 @ 8PM) Concert – Not many people point at The Strand while passing by, turn to their companion, and say “Dude, that place is soooo metal.” We understand. We’re not that kind of cool. But we know some of YOU are, so we are throwing in a special little treat for all you old school heavy rockers out there. One of the nation’s top AC/DC tribute bands is ready to melt your face with a set list that spans four decades of AC/DC’s finest, including the entire Back In Black album as well as hits from Highway To Hell, For Those About To Rock, We Salute You, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, The Razors Edge, Who Made Who, Black Ice and more! Tickets are on sale now, $15 in advance and $18 the day of the show.
Silent Comedy Shorts (Sunday, September 28 @ 3PM) Silent Film – The Earl Smith Strand Theatre, in cooperation with the Atlanta Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society, presents its fifth annual SILENT COMEDY SHORTS. Come see four silent comedy shorts accompanied by four different professional organists, each with a unique approach to the accompaniment of silent film. Experience the antics of The Little Rascals, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, and Charlie Chaplin the way they were meant to be seen: in a historic movie palace on the BIG SCREEN with musical accompaniment and sound effects on the Strand’s Mighty Allen Theatre Organ! John Moore, retired WSB radio personality, will again host this one of a kind event. Nowhere but The Strand can you experience this unique entertainment. Come early at 2:30pm for a pops organ show and sing-a-long. Tickets are $10 for adults and $9 for seniors, students, and military.
The Birds (Friday, October 24 @ 8PM) Movie Screening – This classis Hitchcock horror starring Tippi Hedren comes to The Strand just in time for Halloween. Just when you thought you were over your crippling ornithophobia, The Strand brings you back to the town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people in increasing numbers and with increasing viciousness. Live organ pops variety show and sing-along at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for students, seniors, and military.
The Cat and the Canary (Sunday, October 26 @ 3PM) Silent Film – In this 1927 silent horror film, a decaying mansion and a stormy night is the setting for mystery and chaos when a pack of greedy relatives gather at midnight for the reading of a twenty-year old will. But before the West fortune can be handed down, the family must endure a night in the cavernous manor, unnerved by the news that an escaped lunatic is a large! The Cat and the Canary is a milestone of the American horror film and the one that set the stage for the famous Universal horror films of the 1930’s. The Cat and the Canary will be accompanied live by Strand Organist Ron Carter on the Mighty Allen Theatre Organ. Tickets are $9 for adults and $8 for seniors, students, and military.
