All year long, kids will be able to take a trip back in time to the days of movie palaces and the glamorous silver age of film at The Strand, free of charge. Kids 12 and under will receive free admission to The Strand’s 2019 Silent Film Series, which screens silent films with live theatre organ accompaniment.
Pint-sized guests have been the breakout star of The Strand’s silent films, lining up after the films to meet the organist and take a turn on the Mighty Allen Theatre Organ.
Strand house organist Ron Carter plays theatre organ concerts and accompanies silent films throughout the southeast. He recently played his 50th silent film at The Strand, and says kids love getting to see the instrument up close. “They’re thrilled to push the buttons and make the sound effects they just heard during the movie,” Carter says. “It’s a real treat for them to ride the organ up from inside the pit, just like the organist does. It’s great for them to get exposure to this unique art form that you don’t see anywhere else.”
Every child will get a chance to “Meet the Mighty Allen” after the film and talk to the organist, get their picture taken on the Mighty Allen, and try their hand at making some of the fun movie sounds from the performance. Kids will also get a commemorative pin to take home.
Kid’s admission can be picked up at The Strand box office the day of the films starting two hours before showtime or during regular business hours. Tickets can also be reserved over the phone at 770.293.0080. Adult tickets for the Silent Film Series are $10.
Strand box office hours are 11 AM – 6 PM Monday through Friday, and 9 AM – 12 PM on Saturdays.
