Development Officer

Location: Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre
Job Type: Full-Time

Reports To: Executive Director

General Description
The Development Officer of the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre is responsible for raising funds in support of the Strand’s long-term strategic and annual operating plan.

This includes designing, implementing and managing all fundraising activities including annual giving, grants, sponsorships, campaigns, fundraising events, and other related activities. This position is also responsible for donor records, communications, and related administrative tasks. The Development Officer is expected to represent The Strand in the community and cultivate relationships with donors, advocates, and stakeholders.

The Development Officer will work with The Strand’s accountant, serve as the primary staff liaison for the Development Committee and ad hoc fundraising committees, and work closely under the General Manager, Executive Director, Board, and alongside other staff on a daily basis. There are currently no direct reports to the Development Officer.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising & Revenue

    • Lead a comprehensive fundraising program including annual giving, corporate and foundation support, major gifts, grants, sponsorships, and special events.
    • Develop and manage the annual development plan and budget; meet or exceed fundraising goals.
    • Cultivate, solicit, and steward donors, sponsors, and prospects.
    • Oversee donor benefits and point-of-sale giving initiatives.

Grants & Sponsorships

    • Research, write, submit, and manage foundation, corporate, and government grants.
    • Maintain grant calendars, reporting requirements, and compliance.
    • Develop and execute corporate sponsorship strategies, including capital project support.

Communications & Stewardship

    • Ensure fundraising communications align with The Strand’s brand and messaging.
    • Maintain donor correspondence, acknowledgements, pledges, and membership communications.
    • Collaborate with Marketing on fundraising materials and public relations efforts.
    • Maintain donor databases and record-keeping procedures to track current and prospective donors and accurately report all fundraising income.

Board & Leadership Support

    • Serve as staff liaison to the Board on development matters and provide regular reporting.
    • Support the Development Committee and Board members in fundraising activities and special initiatives.
    • Partner with leadership to strengthen trustee participation in fundraising.

Events & Community Engagement

    • Plan and execute major fundraising events in collaboration with staff and volunteers.
    • Represent The Strand in the community as a professional and informed ambassador.
    • Build and strengthen partnerships that support the theatre’s mission and regional presence.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in fundraising and arts or nonprofit administration
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in arts administration, nonprofit management, communications, or a related field
  • Demonstrated success securing major gifts, grants, sponsorships, and meeting fundraising goals for a mid- to large-size nonprofit
  • Experience building and maintaining productive relationships with board members, donors, community partners, and staff
  • Background in customer service or hospitality a plus

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience using a CRM or donor database such as PatronManager, Tessitura, Blackbaud, DonorPerfect, or SalesForce based platforms.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and social media platforms
  • Working knowledge of budgeting, financial statements, and key financial metrics

Theatre Technician

Location: Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre
Job Type: Full-Time
Department: Production
Reports To: Technical Director

General Description
The Theatre Technician is responsible for assisting in all aspects of production at The Strand. This includes planning, setup, operation, strike, and maintenance of technical and stage equipment for a wide variety of in-house productions, theatre rentals, and other events booked at The Strand. Event types include but are not limited to musical theatre productions, concerts, movies, recitals, lectures, stand up comedy, fundraisers, etc.

This role requires a strong background in technical theatre, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of artists, professionals, and clients

The Theatre Technician reports directly to the Technical Director. The Technical Director reports to the Production Director. The Theatre Technician works closely with all members of the Production Department, as well as artists and professionals both internal and external.

Key Responsibilities
Depending on the nature of the production or event, along with other members of the Production Department the Theatre Technician may be asked to perform duties such as:

General Technical Support:

    • Provide technical support for Strand productions and events.
    • Assist with the maintenance and repair of theatre facilities and equipment.
    • Collaborate with supervisors, other technicians, operators, designers, producers, and performers to assist in the planning and execution of events.
    • Assist with the setup, construction, and strike of sets, props, and scenery.
    • Operate rigging systems and ensure the safe movement of scenery and equipment.
    • Coordinate with stage management and other departments to ensure smooth running of performances as assigned.
    • Act as lead projectionist (digital projection) for movie screenings as assigned.
    • Maintain a clean and organized stage, backstage, and dressing room area.
    • Assist with other event operations as needed.

The ideal candidate is a well-rounded technician with practical knowledge of live production with a specialization in one of the below areas as well as a willingness to gain skills and experience in other areas of production:

Lighting:

    • Design, set up, and operation of lighting equipment for tech rehearsals and performances.
    • Program and run lighting boards for performances and events, including but not limited to concerts and theatrical productions.
    • Maintain and repair lighting instruments and equipment.
    • Oversee the production and quality of professional-level staging and visual effects.
    • Ensure proper storage and inventory of lighting equipment.
    • Perform rigging and lighting duties as needed.

Sound:

    • Set up, operate, and maintain sound equipment including microphones, speakers, and mixing consoles.
    • Conduct sound checks and troubleshoot any audio issues during performances.
    • Mix live sound for performances and events, including but not limited to concerts and theatrical productions.
    • Perform load-in and load-out of band and event equipment, including cabling and patching.
    • Ensure proper care and handling of all audio equipment.
    • Oversee visiting audio techs during shows and events.
    • General Strand Staff Responsibilities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Production or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in technical theatre or a closely related area, with proficiency in lighting, sound, and stage management.
  • Working knowledge of equipment and procedures for lighting, rigging, and live sound control systems.
  • Familiarity with current industry standards and best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Physical Demands/Working Environment

  • Physical ability to lift up to 75lbs and work at heights.
  • Work in an environment with moderate to loud noise levels.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, or crouching during equipment setup.

Special Considerations

  • This position requires night and weekend work based on projects and performance schedules.
  • Periods of high volume/workload may be required.
  • This position must pass a background check.
  • This position works with minors.

Schedule/Details

This is a full time salaried position. The Theatre Technician will be expected to be present for events as well as regular weekday office hours. As production schedules vary, the Theatre Technician is expected to work with the Technical Director to distribute their full-time hours appropriately throughout the week. Staff meetings are weekly on Wednesdays at 2pm and attendance is required.

Stage Manager

Location: Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre
Job Type: Contract
Department: Production

General Description
The Stage Manager (SM) supports the planning and execution of a theatrical production at The Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre by coordinating communication, schedules, and day-to-day production logistics. Working in collaboration with the director and under the guidance of the Production Director, the SM helps move the production from rehearsal through closing and strike while supporting a safe, organized, and efficient process.

This position requires strong organizational skills, calm leadership, technical awareness, and the ability to manage both detailed logistics and interpersonal dynamics in a live performance environment.

Key Responsibilities
Rehearsals and Pre-Production

  • Participate in the full rehearsal and production process from first rehearsal through closing strike.
  • Read and understand the script and production concept.
  • Record blocking, staging, and director’s notes, and communicate key decisions as needed.
  • Assist with rehearsal scheduling and communicate call times, fittings, meetings, and schedule changes.
  • Maintain rehearsal spaces, presets, and safety.

Communication and Reporting

  • Serve as the primary point of communication for the production, facilitating information flow between the director, cast, designers, technicians, crew, and production staff.
  • Prepare and distribute clear, timely rehearsal reports, performance reports, and technical notes to appropriate departments.
  • Notify department heads of changes, notes, or concerns when they are not present.
  • Communicate with Strand staff regarding building access, safety needs, front of house coordination, and performance logistics as needed.

Technical Rehearsals and Performances

  • Coordinate all backstage operations during technical rehearsals and performances.
  • Call lighting, sound, projection, automation, and other cues during technical rehearsals and performances.
  • Conduct pre-show checks to confirm that cast, crew, and tech elements are ready prior to house opening.
  • Be the director’s representative and maintain the integrity of the production once it opens.
  • Monitor performance quality, pacing, safety, and consistency, addressing issues as they arise.
  • Maintain backstage discipline, organization, and safety throughout the run.
  • Complete performance reports noting incidents, technical issues, or maintenance needs.

Safety and Facility Responsibilities

  • Become familiar with The Strand building, backstage areas, emergency procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Monitor backstage conditions to ensure a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
  • Close down rehearsal spaces and performance areas as required after rehearsals and performances.

Post-Production

  • Assist with strike in coordination with production and technical staff.
  • Ensure materials are returned, stored, or reset as required.
  • Complete final reports and documentation.

Work Schedule

The Stage Manager must be available for the full rehearsal and performance schedule of the production. Rehearsal and performance schedules are subject to change based on the needs of the production. The Stage Manager is expected to arrive before all other personnel and remain until all participants have left for each rehearsal and performance. Typical schedules may include:

  • Evening rehearsals during the rehearsal period, often Monday through Thursday evenings and either Saturday or Sundays.
  • Extended rehearsals on designer days, cue-to-cue, and technical rehearsal days.
  • Evening and matinee performances during the run.

Qualifications

  • Highly organized with strong time-management and problem-solving skills.

  • Working knowledge of theatrical production elements, including lighting, sound, scenery, props, costumes, and backstage operations.

  • Proficiency with email, digital documents, and scheduling tools.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Prior theatrical or technical production experience required.
  • Stage management or leadership experience in theatre required.

Physical Demands/Working Environment

  • Standing, walking, bending, stooping, and occasional climbing.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50lbss.
  • Moderate noise levels typical of a working theatre environment.

Event Staff/Bartender

Reports To: Bar and Concessions Manager
Starting pay: $8.50 per hour, plus tips

General Description

A Bartender/Event Staff employee is responsible for maintaining operations and assisting customers at The Strand concessions stand or bar and lounge spaces.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Ability to provide excellent guest service while working in a fast-paced environment
  • Proper cash handling including, greet and service guests at the registers, taking orders, and accepting payments, handling cash, debit and credit cards
  • Prepare food and beverage such as popcorn, candy, fountain sodas, beer, wine, and mixed drinks using standard formulas or following directions.
  • Prepare bills for food, using cash registers, calculators, or adding machines; and accept payment and make change.
  • Clean workspace and equipment, and clean dishes and fountain equipment
  • Inventory control: Assess inventory and assist in preparing product orders as necessary
  • Stock and restock items as necessary
  • Ensure all sanitation procedures are followed relating to all local licensing regulations

General Strand Staff Responsibilities

  • Contributing to an inclusive work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Maintaining a high degree of professionalism when interacting with staff, patrons, and the general public as a representative of The Strand, during the course of business, and when on Strand property.
  • Contributing to the overall success of The Strand by performing all other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Event Staff/Bartender Qualifications and Skills:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Prior concessions and bar experience preferred including POS systems and purchasing
  • Must utilize excellent guest service skills to enhance the theatre experience and meet the needs of patrons with a positive attitude
  • Must be able to multitask and be self-motivated
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and congenially with patrons about theatre events, programs, and history
  • Possesses excellent cash handling skills and knowledge of daily sales reporting
  • Adherence to a uniform policy and grooming standards -must present a neat, professional appearance
  • Qualified candidate will be a mature, responsible, dependable individual who enjoys working in a fast paced environment
  • Must satisfactorily fulfill all departmental training requirements

  • If an employee holds another job, The Strand should be considered the primary employer and has no objection as long as he or she can effectively meet the performance standards for his or her position with The Strand. All employees will be held to the same scheduling demands and standards of performance required for the position regardless of outside employment.
    Staff should assume there are guests in the theatre at all times and maintain an appropriate demeanor.
  • Staff should not eat, smoke, or chew gum in the presence of customers or in any public area of the theatre.
  • Staff should maintain the highest standards relating to personal hygiene.
  • Staff should escort guests, rather than pointing out directions to another area of the theatre, when possible.
  • All public facing employees should be smart and professional in business dress. Examples of unacceptable dress include jeans, sneakers, open toed shoes, tshirts, hats, shorts, sweatshirts, wrinkled or faded clothing, overly revealing or offensive attire, clothing with holes, tears, or stains.
  • Maintaining order and cleanliness of workspaces is the responsibility of every employee.

This is a part-time position. Starting pay is $8.50, plus tips. Event staff must be willing to work a flexible schedule that includes nights, weekends, holidays and special events.

Volunteer Usher

General Description

Volunteer Ushers are an essential part of the guest experience at the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre. Ushers serve as the theatre’s front-of-house hospitality team, helping patrons feel welcomed, informed, and supported before, during, and after each performance.

This volunteer role is ideal for individuals who enjoy customer service, supporting the arts, and being part of a historic, community-focused nonprofit organization. All ushers receive training prior to working independently

Primary Responsibilities

Volunteer Ushers may be assigned a variety of front-of-house duties, including:

  • Greeting patrons and providing a warm, professional welcome
  • Scanning or taking tickets and assisting with audience flow
  • Helping patrons locate seats and navigate the theatre
  • Assisting with ADA seating, wheelchair access, and mobility needs
  • Answering patron questions or locating staff when needed
  • Monitoring the auditorium for disruptions, safety concerns, or guest needs
  • Supporting intermission crowd movement

Ushers are expected to remain attentive and visible throughout the performance and to prioritize patron needs at all times.

Schedule and Time Commitment

  • Most usher shifts occur on evenings and weekends
  • Occasional daytime weekday events may require usher support
  • Ushers are expected to arrive 90 minutes prior to the scheduled start time
  • Ushers typically remain on duty until approximately 15 minutes after the performance begins

To remain in good standing, ushers are expected to volunteer for a minimum number of events per calendar year.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 16
  • Friendly, professional demeanor and strong customer service skills
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and navigate stairs
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and be flexible with assignments
  • Reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail
  • Interest in the performing arts and community service

Prior ushering or theatre experience is not required.

  • The opportunity to stay and watch the performance after ushering duties are complete, seating permitting

  • Ushers must follow all theatre policies, including safety and emergency procedures
  • Alcohol consumption while performing usher duties is strictly prohibited
  • Ushers are expected to be familiar with basic theatre information, seating layout, house rules, event details, and emergency exits
  • Usher conversations and personal activities should never take priority over patron service
