Director's Note

Welcome to our production of Anastasia The Musical: Youth Edition!

It is with great excitement that I invite you to join us on this unforgettable journey from the streets of St. Petersburg to the dazzling lights of Paris. Directing this production has been a deeply rewarding experience, and I’m honored to share it with such a talented, passionate group of young performers.

At its core, Anastasia is a story of courage, identity, and the power of hope. It follows Anya—a brave, determined young woman—as she searches for answers about her past and discovers where she truly belongs. Along the way, she meets friends who become family, faces shadows from history, and ultimately learns that home is not just a place, but the people who believe in you.

I am incredibly proud of our remarkable students (ages 10-19) who are bringing this story to life. Their talent, maturity, and commitment have far exceeded expectations. This cast and crew have poured their hearts into every rehearsal, every note, and every line. They’ve embraced the emotional depth, humor, and elegance of Anastasia with a sincerity beyond their years. Watching them grow not only as performers but as collaborators and storytellers has been nothing short of inspiring.

This production would not have been possible without the incredible support of our creative team. I am especially grateful to Alyssa Hutcheson, my amazing Co-Director; our choreographer, Mac Eckenfels; our Stage Manager, Katie Harmon; our student assistant director, Kristopher Hatfield; and our student costume designer and assistant stage manager, Will Schuurman. Your vision, leadership, and creativity have shaped every moment of this production.

A heartfelt thank you as well to all The Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre’s staff and board members for giving our young artists a stage to shine on and a space to grow.

As you watch Anastasia, I hope you are swept away by its beauty, moved by its message, and reminded that even when the past feels uncertain, the future is full of possibility.

Thank you for joining us—enjoy the “Journey to the Past” and beyond.
