Development Director

The Development Director (DD) of the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre is responsible for designing, implementing and managing all fundraising activities including annual giving, sponsorships, endowment and capital campaigns, special projects, and other related solicitations. This position is also responsible for donor record keeping and other related administrative tasks.

The Development Director creates and implements a fundraising plan detailing how the organization can obtain financial support via individual investors, grants, charitable events, and sponsorships. The fundraising plan also contains strategies to successfully build a large donor base and ensure effective fundraising.

The Development Director is required to personally cultivate relationships and solicit donors for fundraising and sponsorship, along with the support of the Board of trustees and leadership staff. The DD reports to the General Manager and works closely with the Board of Trustees.

This is a part time, salaried position.



  • Managing strategies and activities for donor cultivation, solicitation, and relations;
  • Maintaining contact with and writes grant proposals for foundations, corporations, and government grants;
  • Researching and contacting new or potential corporate, foundation, government and individual donors;
  • Assuming responsibility for all development reports to the General Manager, Board, and other agencies;
  • Assist Special Events Committee in coordinating fundraising events;
  • Managing donor, gift record-keeping and grant reporting;
  • Managing the pledge reminder and acknowledgement programs;
  • Attending community events related to donor cultivation;
  • Participating in outreach activities and performances outside regular business hours; and,
  • Being available to assist in any other capacity as assigned.


Key Relationships

  • Reports to the general manager
  • Works with Bookkeeper on incoming donations and pledges
  • Serves as primary staff liaison for the Development Committee and ad hoc fundraising committees



  • Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Three (3) years of experience in development;
  • Independent, goal-driven work ethic;
  • Experience developing and maintaining productive working relationships with board members, donors, and community members;
  • Ability to quickly learn new ticketing/registration/donor/event software;
  • Experience in a customer service/hospitality;
  • An understanding of budgeting principles;
  • A lover of the arts;
  • Creative and persuasive writing skills;
  • Excellent verbal, written, organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work in a team environment;
  • Ability to work on a variety of projects simultaneously is essential; and,
  • Demonstrated attention to detail required.



  • Salary $43,000-$48,000 based upon experience
  • Part time: 25-30 hours per week
  • Position will primarily telecommute via Google’s Gsuite programs. In addition, position is expected to attend weekly meetings at The Strand as well as other outreach-related meetings and events.
